La Ciudad Podrida Vol.1 - Medellin, Colombia, 1990

1989 and 1990 was a decisive time for the growing Colombian Hard Core scene.
The first punk vinyl ever pressed there back in 1989 was the split ep with Rasix and Sociedad Violenta. Outside the Colombian borders, the grindcore band Confusion had released a flexi on a Japanese label back in 1990. I read a Colombian scene report in MRR back then, and it seems there's a vivid and dynamic punk scene, while at the same time, the mainstream media depict Colombia as a very troubled and dangerous country, plagued with crime, poverty, terrorism, guerillas and the terrible Medellin drug cartel.

Colombia scene report, MRR n°88
note the HP/HC singer wears a Bloody Fuckers T-shirt, that's almost surreal...

One or Two years after reading this scene report, a friend of mine had pen-pals in Colombia and used to trade records with them, he had the opportunity to find me an extra copy of this lp. Listening to this record is a very special experience, you are exposed to very raw, aggressive and primitive music. The seven bands featured on this plate all have the same crude and distorted sound, it seems that they all recorded in the same studio, sharing the same equipment. The production values as well as the context makes this record a particular moment of the South American punk history.
Bands featured are all coming from the city of Medellin, this sampler seems to be a combined effort, a cooperation between the different band's members.

B.S.N. ( Bastardos Sin Nombre )open the record with five raging and desperate songs, they sounded more tame on their other recordings. This is where the production play its role there; the bands sounds angrier...
HP/HC are in my opinion the most violent band of the bunch, even when they slow down, they still sound furious and desperate. the song "Despierta" illustrates quite well this oppressive feeling.
Crimen Impune were the short lived band preceding the well-known Fertil Miseria, but rawer, of course.
Diskordia are primitive and discordant. Previously featured on the tape compilation "Estamos en La Sima", which was the draft, recorded in 1989, of this Lp.
Ataque De Sonido play very chaotic Noise Core bordering on Grind. That was the project following the terrible Imagen.
Dexkoncierto play rather simple, yet fast and straightforward Hard Core. They re-united in the early 2000s and recorded a CD titled "Resistiendo La Dexintegracion".
Restos De Tragedia lay three tracks of primitive Prog-core, this bands really sounds like no other, special mention to the song "Una Razon Para Cambiar".

Well, You can download this wonderful, overwhelming record here:

This insert contains english translations for the lyrics, i can provide a better resolution scan if requested.

Adding to the weird production values, the vinyl pressing seems to be as crude as the music, notice the small ripples on the disc's surface...
